Ben Sherman - Guitar & Piano Teacher

Ben Sherman - Guitar & Piano

I grew up in a very musical family, and have been fortunate to have been surrounded by music my whole life. I started playing piano at 4 or 5 years old, and then I took up the trumpet in my elementary school band and stuck with it until high school. When I turned 16, I discovered the guitar and fell in love with it. I immediately knew that I wanted to spend my life studying the guitar, and after high school, I attended Duquesne University, and majored in music performance.

Since graduating from Duquesne, I have spent a lot of time gigging in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas with musicians such as Dwayne Dolphin, Poogie Bell, and Tony Campbell. In 2015, I recorded an album with my own band, Corners. I’m currently in the Tony Campbell Quintet and the Anton DeFade Acoustic Trio, and I perform regularly around town with both groups.

As a teacher I like to start by talking with my students about what they’d like to get out of guitar lessons and then we build our curriculum around the skills that they’ll have to develop to reach those goals. If I can show a student how things like technique, rhythm, ear training and a general knowledge of their instrument apply to the music that they love–instead of giving these things to them out of context–they’re a lot more likely to get a lot out of our lessons and enjoy it at the same time.
