Sunburst Rocks Main Stage

Most musicians would agree that they learned and grew the most when they started playing with others. Sunburst Rocks Main Stage is about helping kids who are involved in private lessons to take their playing to the next level through collaboration, creativity and on-stage experience.

Our instructors have years of experience performing and songwriting in the Pittsburgh area and strive to pass that knowledge along to the next generation.

This year round program is divided into three seasons (Fall, Spring, Summer,) each exploring a different genre, artist, album or time period and ending with a concert in a real rock venue. Students work with their instructors during weekly private lessons on parts for each song and come together for a coached band rehearsal once per week. Students are provided several mid-season performance opportunities in community functions as well as getting a taste of what it's like to lay down a track in our recording studio.

Main Stage is a 2 hour per week, year round program. Its appropriate for kids who have been playing for a minimum of a few months and meet a few basic ability prerequisites. Space is reserved each season for newcomers to join any month of the year and still have a role in the upcoming show.

Fall 2018 Theme: Pittsburgh Live!

Pittsburgh Live

This school year our group programs will be digging into the music scene in our hometown! Together we’ll be learning songs from local artists and big names touring through Pittsburgh in 2018, as well as writing songs, recording and performing our own live concerts. To go with the live music theme, we’re encouraging our young musicians to get out and see music in their community and to get on stage themselves as much as possible. Because this season is all about emphasizing live performance, our groups will have an extraordinary number of performance opportunities big and small, from being under the lights at our showcase in December, to busking outside Sunburst for the scholarship fund, to jamming out during our annual halloween party and more!

We also hope to use this season’s theme to help our kids peek under the hood and learn more about how live music really works including booking venues, designing merchandise, promoting their shows, and running sound and lights. We believe one of the best ways to learn is by doing, and to reflect that mission, our projects this season for Sunburst Rocks focuses on planning, booking and promoting their very own show!

Live music is a great force in bringing people together and we look forward to spending this season educating our young musicians about the amazing music community in Pittsburgh and helping them become a part of it!
