If you love playing bass and are would like to gain on-stage experience with other talented students, we encourage you to talk with your instructor and sign up to audition!

What you can expect to prepare:

One song of their choice - the first 90 seconds
Two excerpts chosen by the Sunburst staff
Scales

What is the House Band?

The Sunburst House Band is a year-long, audition-based band program tailored for students aged 10–17. Throughout the program, selected students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on stage at various Pittsburgh venues and events, refining their skills and bolstering their confidence in their musical abilities. The House Band program is ideal for students who are passionate about their instrument, enjoy collaborating with others, and are eager to explore new horizons in their musical journey.

The 2024 House Band cohort will convene for weekly 2-hour rehearsals on Sundays from 4-6pm, continuing until the end of December. Participants can expect to perform at least one gig per month and collaborate on recording an EP of original music by year-end. In December, the cohort will come to a close with an exciting performance at a local venue, serving as both a celebration of their collective achievements and a release party for their original music!

This program is all about growth, working together, and performing at cool gigs! So if you’re passionate about your instrument and want to push yourself a little bit, we highly encourage you to audition!

If selected, participation in the Sunburst House Band is FREE for students enrolled in the Sunburst Band Program or a Band Coaching group!

What an incredible weekend of performances for Sunburst students! Our student Open Mic Night on Friday was truly special with a supportive crowd thanks to our amazing community of students and families. Finally Sunday was the culmination of the 2023 Sunburst House Band season at the Government Center. The show included two awesome opening sets from Sunburst related acts Aurora and Abbey Kelkenberg. The House Band put on a blistering performance making a diverse selection of technically challenging songs look easy, and clearly having a blast. Sean (aka the House Band rhythm guitarist) also led the audience in a special birthday serenade to his brother Ethan who is also one of our delightful students! Huge thank you and congratulations to this group! Especially our graduating members Nate and Nina who’ve both been a part of Sunburst groups for a decade. The Sunburst House Band wraps up it’s ‘23 campaign with a show this Sunday at the Government Center! Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of this year’s group! A spiffy little trick from guitar instructor @jonathandigiulian. Check it out… Artificial harmonics are when a guitarist creates a harmonic where it does not naturally occur on the instrument. One way to get these artificial harmonics involves using a specific right hand technique demonstrated in this video. The guitarist most commonly associated with this technique is Lenny Breau. The wait is over! Our remodeling at Sunburst is finally complete. First of all, we would like to thank everyone for their patience during the process. We can’t wait to share our new space with you for years to come. To celebrate, we’re going to be hosting an Open House event on Saturday February 25th from 3-7pm. This event will cater to new and prospective students, current and former students, and our community at large. For anyone looking to try a new instrument we’ll have a few teachers offering free 5 minute “Mini-lessons”, we’ll also be running some demonstrations of our group programs. Current students can tour the school and peek into any of the rooms they don’t usually get to see. We’ll also have performances on stage from students and staff, snacks, games, and a few giveaways. We’ll be posting a more detailed schedule of activities as we get closer to the event. We’d like to thank you, again, for being a part of the Sunburst community. Jaime Cohen is a second-generation music teacher, having begun piano lessons in her mother’s studio at the age of 5. Hey everyone meet Eli Dawson @e_dawson Eli teaches guitar, music production and group programs. Eli Dawson is a Guitarist and Music Producer from Harmony, PA. He graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 2106, with a degree in Electronic Music Production. He found a love for teaching music while volunteering as a Mentor for High School aged musicians who were applying for Music College. He has been teaching music for eight years on a variety of instruments, as well as Music Theory and Music Recording / Production lessons. Currently, Eli tours nationally as a Guitarist and DJ, as well as producing and recording as a freelance engineer. He specializes in Jazz, R&B and Pop, but has experience playing and performing all genres of music. He believes that music should be fun and rewarding above all else. He believes that there is a place for music in everyone’s life, regardless of career or prior experience. He loves nurturing and exploring the creative outlet that music provides.

Meet guitar instructor Jonathan Digiulian @jonathandigiulian Jonathan is a guitarist and music educator from the small town of Beckley, WV. His passion for music began at the age of 11 when he heard the theme song to the TV show Monk. Instantly inspired, he picked up his father's guitar and tried to learn the song. His love for music led him to West Virginia Wesleyan College where he graduated with a degree in music education. He has since moved to the Pittsburgh area to find more opportunities for his passions; performing and teaching music. What an incredible weekend of performances for Sunburst students! Our student Open Mic Night on Friday was truly special with a supportive crowd thanks to our amazing community of students and families. Finally Sunday was the culmination of the 2023 Sunburst House Band season at the Government Center. The show included two awesome opening sets from Sunburst related acts Aurora and Abbey Kelkenberg. The House Band put on a blistering performance making a diverse selection of technically challenging songs look easy, and clearly having a blast. Sean (aka the House Band rhythm guitarist) also led the audience in a special birthday serenade to his brother Ethan who is also one of our delightful students! Huge thank you and congratulations to this group! Especially our graduating members Nate and Nina who’ve both been a part of Sunburst groups for a decade. Reminder: Auditions for next year’s House Band are April 7th, see the full criteria and sign up on our website.

The Sunburst House Band wraps up it’s ‘23 campaign with a show this Sunday at the Government Center! Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of this year’s group! A spiffy little trick from guitar instructor @jonathandigiulian. Check it out… Artificial harmonics are when a guitarist creates a harmonic where it does not naturally occur on the instrument. One way to get these artificial harmonics involves using a specific right hand technique demonstrated in this video. The guitarist most commonly associated with this technique is Lenny Breau. We can’t wait to share our new space with you for years to come. To celebrate, we’re going to be hosting an Open House event on Saturday February 25th from 3-7pm. This event will cater to new and prospective students, current and former students, and our community at large. For anyone looking to try a new instrument we’ll have a few teachers offering free 5 minute “Mini-lessons”, we’ll also be running some demonstrations of our group programs. Current students can tour the school and peek into any of the rooms they don’t usually get to see. We’ll also have performances on stage from students and staff, snacks, games, and a few giveaways. We’ll be posting a more detailed schedule of activities as we get closer to the event. We’d like to thank you, again, for being a part of the Sunburst community. Your support of our school, especially in these past few years, means more to us than you could ever know. We hope you’ll come and celebrate with us!

Jaime Cohen is a second-generation music teacher, having begun piano lessons in her mother’s studio at the age of 5. She earned her Bachelor’s in Music and Anthropology from Kenyon College and her Master’s in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Hey everyone meet Eli Dawson @e_dawson Eli teaches guitar, music production and group programs. Eli Dawson is a Guitarist and Music Producer from Harmony, PA. He graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 2106, with a degree in Electronic Music Production. He found a love for teaching music while volunteering as a Mentor for High School aged musicians who were applying for Music College. He has been teaching music for eight years on a variety of instruments, as well as Music Theory and Music Recording / Production lessons. Currently, Eli tours nationally as a Guitarist and DJ, as well as producing and recording as a freelance engineer. He specializes in Jazz, R&B and Pop, but has experience playing and performing all genres of music. He believes that music should be fun and rewarding above all else. He believes that there is a place for music in everyone’s life, regardless of career or prior experience. He loves nurturing and exploring the creative outlet that music provides.

Meet guitar instructor Jonathan Digiulian @jonathandigiulian Jonathan is a guitarist and music educator from the small town of Beckley, WV. His passion for music began at the age of 11 when he heard the theme song to the TV show Monk. Instantly inspired, he picked up his father's guitar and tried to learn the song. His love for music led him to West Virginia Wesleyan College where he graduated with a degree in music education. He has since moved to the Pittsburgh area to find more opportunities for his passions; performing and teaching music.
