About guitar lessons
From your first chord to center stage
Sunburst began as a one-room guitar studio, and guitar is still the heart of the school. Whether you want to strum campfire songs, shred solos, fingerpick folk tunes, or write your own music, your lessons are built around the music that inspires you.
Starting out on guitar is all about turning individual notes into the chords and riffs that drive your favorite songs. From the moment you press down on your first string, your instructor will guide you through the basics to get you jamming right away. For more experienced players, the focus of your lessons can vary widely depending on your interests, from complex lead work to alternate tuning, improvisation, or songwriting.
Along the way, you'll learn technique and music theory directly through the songs you play and get real chances to perform throughout the year, including our student recitals, open mics, and even shows at local venues if you join the Sunburst Band Program.

Frequently asked questions
Good to know before you book
What happens at a trial lesson?
You'll meet one-on-one with a teacher we match to your age, taste, and goals. You'll play, talk about what you want to learn, and leave with a plan to help reach your goals. Trials run 20 to 60 minutes, cost $25 to $50, and are limited to one per student per instructor.
Do I need my own guitar?
Not right away. You can play one of ours at the studio, and when you're ready for your own we can help you pick a starter or set you up through our rental program.
What ages do you teach?
Kids, teens, and adults, from young beginners to retirees. 20-minute lessons are for ages 4-5, for most older kids we recommend 30-45 minutes, and for adults we recommend 45-60 minutes. For little ones ages 0 to 5, our Music Together® classes are the place to start.
Can I take lessons with a friend or family member?
Yes. Private Group Lessons put two or three friends or family members with one teacher on the same instrument, in the same time slots as our private lessons. Every student in the group pays less than they would for a private lesson of the same length, starting at $110/mo each. See group lesson rates →
What if we need to miss a lesson?
Cancel with at least 24 hours notice (or same-day in case of illness or emergency) and you'll receive a Make Up Pass, valid for 6 months and bookable online.
Do I have to commit to weekly lessons?
No. Weekly plans are month-to-month, and if a plan doesn't fit your schedule you can book drop-in lessons and pay as you go: $45 for 30 minutes, $65 for 45 minutes, $80 for 60 minutes.
Can I take lessons online?
Yes. All of our private lessons are available online via Zoom, and many students mix in-person and online lessons depending on the week.
How do we pick the right teacher?
Our admin team pairs students and teachers based on interests, age, and learning style, and you can browse teacher bios in our booking system. If it's not the right fit, you can switch teachers at any time.
