3 Terms Per Year

The Suntones program runs on three annual terms:

  • September–January: 5 months
  • February–May: 4 months
  • June–August: 3 months

Enrollment

Students enroll on a month-to-month basis but are expected to commit to the full term. This ensures consistency within the group and helps everyone prepare for the big finale performance.

At the end of each term, students who would like to continue singing with their Suntones group will have the option to pre-enroll and reserve their spot in the upcoming term before open enrollment starts. Failure to re-enroll within this designated period will result in the release of their guaranteed spot, making it available to other students during open enrollment.

The Suntones FAQ

  • How do the terms work? Do I need to commit to the whole term?

The Suntones runs on three annual terms:

    • Sep–Jan - 5 months
    • Feb–May - 4 months
    • Jun–Aug - 3 months

Each term includes weekly practices, with performance opportunities accruing in the second half, culminating with a big finale show at one of many great Pittsburgh venues. It’s important that these groups stick together through the end of the term so that no one is left hanging during performance season.

  • Are there trial sessions available?

The nature of these group programs requires everyone to commit to the full term and allow their group some time to settle into a groove. If it’s not a good fit for you, you can cancel anytime in the first month of the term for a full refund.

  • How much experience do I need?

The Suntones has a spot for beginners and seasoned vocalists. All are welcome! If you need additional practice with a teacher outside of rehearsal, set up a trial lesson with one of our voice instructors here and they will help you feel more confident singing your parts!

  • Do I need to take lessons in addition to the program?

Students are NOT required to participate in private lessons in addition to The Suntones. We want this group to be an accessible and welcoming space to all. We just ask that you make time to sing and practice your parts outside of class so that we can come together and sing as a group during rehearsals.

  • What should I bring to my session?

Your instructor may give you practice materials that you’ll need to bring to class each week. Otherwise, just show up ready to sing! Check the comments section of your Opus1 account for messages from your instructor related to materials.

  • What happens if I need to miss a session?

Please let the front desk know if you need to miss rehearsal, even if it's the same day. While we don't provide refunds or makeups for missed sessions, we do hold free monthly community jam sessions called Sunburst Jams. These events are a great way for our students to get some extra practice time in!

    Check schedule here.

  • What happens at the end of the term?

Our terms wrap up with a big finale show, after which there may be a few extra weeks of class that can be used for learning new songs, recording, and other exciting activities that your teacher might have up their sleeve.

For students who would like to continue singing with their Suntones group, we provide a two-week enrollment window during which current students can reserve their spot before open enrollment starts. Failure to re-enroll within this designated period will result in the release of their guaranteed spot, making it available to other students during open enrollment.
